Considering Carrot Top has performed in front of audiences there since 2005, it might surprise fans to learn that he’s actually a pretty private person.
Calling himself “very shy and quiet” and noting he loves to sit alone and think, “I don’t like being around a lot of people,” the headliner said on a 2024 episode of the Habits and Hustle podcast. “I know it’s weird because I do it for a living. But if I had to go to a party and sit around with 100 people and talking to them, I would lose my mind. So I don’t go to social functions much.”
Besides, not all interactions have been kind.
“Like anybody else, it’s human nature, you want everyone to love you,” he said on a 2022 episode of Allison Kugel’s Allison Interviews. “And you know it’s kind of a cliché: ‘You can’t please everybody and not everyone’s going to love you, dude.'”
Sometimes, the criticism came not only from audience members, but also from fellow comedians.
“People have always, always, from day one when I got into this business, they always made fun of me,” Carrot Top added. “I think it was just the red hair, the freckles, the name, the props, everything. It might’ve just been a whole smorgasbord of didn’t like me.”
And while he admitted these words hurt his feelings for most of his career, he then started to “consider the source” of them and focus more on his supporters than his naysayers.
“The most important part about this whole thing is fans,” the comic shared. “You kind of start getting rid of people that are negative because you don’t need them. You look out at the audience and say, ‘All these people love me. I’m not performing to the people that don’t love me.'”
