The “” movie, Warner Bros. Picture’s “Cut Off” and an untitled flick from the Daniels are among the 51 films receiving 2025 production tax incentives through California’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program.
The California Film Commission set the state record by awarding 51 films a collective $330 million in tax credits. The latest batch is expected to generate nearly $580 million in economic activity and employ over 6,490 cast and crew, as well as 37,000 background performers. Universal’s untitled Daniels project is expected to inject $106.8 million in production spending into the California economy, qualifying for $20.8 million in tax credits. The “Community” movie is expected to inject $16.3 million, earning a credit allocation of $3.3 million. “Cut Off” will bring an estimated $49.4 million into the California economy and receive $10 million in tax credits.
“The devastating wildfires in Southern California have presented unprecedented challenges for our film and television community, disrupting more than a dozen productions within our Film & Television Tax Credit Program alone and impacting countless more”, said Colleen Bell, director of the California Film Commission. “These disruptions have impacted employment for thousands of cast and crew members, affecting everything from production schedules and financing to housing and location access. Now more than ever, this program is a critical tool to help productions recover, keeping jobs and investment here in our state, all while ensuring that California remains the heart of the entertainment industry.”
The 2025 allocations include a slate of 46 independent and 5 non-independent films. 31 of the projects will shoot outside of Los Angeles, collectively planning more than 360 production days in Contra Costa, Oakland, Ojai, Merced and San Diego Counties.
Nothing is known about the untitled Universal film helmed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as the Daniels, other than a projected release date of June 12, 2026. The highly anticipated “Community” movie has also been kept tightly under wraps. However, series creator Dan Harmond told Variety in February 2024 that the script was “almost done.”
Jonah Hill is rumored to direct and star in “Cut Off” for Warner Bros. It’s been reported that Jennifer Lawrence has been offered to star alongside him. The film follows two exuberantly wealthy twins who are suddenly cut off from their family’s fortune and are forced to fend for themselves.
