On the eve of Berlin’s European Film Market, Seoul-based sales outfit Finecut inked a batch of deals for South Korea’s upcoming occult animated feature Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning. The company also added a raft of sales for the multi-contemporary horror flick Noise, directed by first-time filmmaker Kim Soo-jin.
Produced by Korean VFX house Locus Animation Studios, Exorcism Chronicles is an adaptation of a best-selling Korean internet novel that sold 10 million copies and logged over 238 million views. The film follows Father Park, a doctor-turned priest who must protect a powerful child from his corrupt master within a secretive, magic-wielding temple. It has been acquired by Pro Films (Bulgaria), Polyband (GAS), Cineplex (Latin America) and Cola Films (Taiwan).
Starring Lee Sun-bin, Noise tells the story of a woman with a hearing impediment who is haunted by sounds in her apartment that seem linked to her sister’s disappearance and the presence of a malevolent spirit.
Produced by KC Ventures and Studio Finecut, Noise added distribution pacts with Twin (Japan), Westec Media (Cambodia), Great Movies (Latin America), Antenna Entertainment (Malaysia & Brunei), Media4Fun (Poland), Cai Chang International (Taiwan), Lumix Media (Vietnam). This follows prior deals with KMBO (France), Red Castle Group (CIS), PT Prima Cinema Multimedia (Indonesia), and Iris Cinema Thailand (Thailand).
Noise stars Lee Sun-bin (Work Later, Drink Now) and Kim Min-seok (Body Parts). The film is planned for a wide release in South Korea in May.
Finecut will be screening both titles for buyers throughout EFM, which runs Feb. 13-19.
Other titles making their market debut in Berlin from Finecut include A Girl with Closed Eyes, featuring Pachinko star Kim Minha, and What Does That Nature Say to You, Korean auteur Hong Sangsoo’s latest feature, which will premiere in the Berlin festival’s main competition.
