The Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel had a cardiac arrest and was rushed to hospital after an on-field collision in a Spanish second-division match.

De Miguel was challenging for the ball in midfield when he was struck in the chest by Andorra’s goalkeeper Jesús Owono during the final minutes at Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López on Monday.

The 30-year-old De Miguel was taken to hospital and the match abandoned. Tenerife said in a message posted in the early hours of Tuesday: “Jesús de Miguel’s medical condition has worsened neurologically. More information in the coming hours.”

Tenerife had said in a statement about 11 hours earlier that he was “stable, despite the severity of his condition”, in the intensive care unit of Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz.

Several first-division clubs and the Spanish Football Federation sent their best wishes. “From the RFEF, we would like to extend all our encouragement, strength, and support to Jesús de Miguel, as well as to the entire CD Tenerife family,” the federation posted on social media.

De Miguel made his debut in 2015 with Leganés B and has played for eight other clubs in Spain, including Tenerife, where he arrived last year.
