Nicolas Cage has spoken out after a large sinkhole near his California home forced him to evacuate in September.
A sinkhole that measured 25 feet deep and 30 by 60 feet in diameter opened up near the driveway of Cage’s Malibu home on Sept. 8. The large crater caused 31 nearby homes to be evacuated, which including the mansion belonging to Cage and his family. He spoke at a panel at the Los Angeles Comic Con on Halloween and gave attendees an update on his housing situation.
“I’m currently a little bit homeless,” he said. “Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels.”
Officials haven’t determined how the sinkhole was formed, but it was likely caused by the unusually strong Hurricane Marie that battered California in early September. The tropical storm brought large waves and flooding to some oceanfront homes in Southern California.
Nevertheless, Cage stayed positive during the panel and shared his alternative Halloween plans now that he’s staying away from his home.
“I don’t have normal trick-or-treaters that I would like to enjoy tonight,” he said. “I’ll take my daughter out trick-or-treating somewhere in Santa Monica, but I am going to watch a movie where the director was actually nominated for worst director at the Razzies — called ‘The Shining.’ He directed the hell out of that movie. I’m going to watch that tonight. After I put my daughter to bed, I’m going to put on ‘The Shining.’”
Cage was recently revealed to be starring in Season 5 of HBO’s “True Detective,” alongside Antonio Banderas. On the film side, Cage is starring as football coach John Madden in Amazon MGM’s “Madden” on Nov. 11.
