Newzoo Releases New Data on Playtime and Revenue from Gaming Report

More video game playtime and revenue is now coming from games beyond the top 20 most popular PC games, according to a new report from Newzoo.

For PC, 56% of Western-based revenue came from games ranked outside the top 20 last year, up from 48% in 2022.

PC saw a jump from 33% of playtime across games outside the 20 most popular in 2022 to 42% in 2025, with smaller but similar shifts taking place on PlayStation and Xbox.

The report also broke down gaming dynamics by platform, finding significant differences. Per Newzoo, PC has a long tail growing in both playtime and revenue. PlayStation saw broadening engagement, but spending remained franchise-led. Meanwhile, more games were played on Xbox due to its subscription setup, but revenue remained top-heavy.

However, Newzoo also found that the gaming market remains highly concentrated at the top, with the top 20 remaining stable, but more games needed to capture the same amount of playtime. The study found that 80% of PC playtime spanned 79 titles in 2025 compared to 52 titles in 2022.

“Crimson Desert” has crossed a major commercial milestone, with developer Pearl Abyss announcing Wednesday that the open-world action-adventure title has surpassed 5 million copies sold globally.

The figure marks a significant achievement for Pearl Abyss, whose latest flagship release has helped reinforce its standing in the competitive AAA gaming space. Since its launch, “Crimson Desert” has drawn strong engagement from players, reaching a peak of more than 276,000 concurrent users on Steam.

The game has also earned solid marks from both critics and audiences, currently holding a 77 score on Metacritic alongside an 8.8 user rating. Set in a fantasy realm, “Crimson Desert” follows mercenary Kliff of the Greymanes as he attempts to reunite his scattered allies after a devastating ambush, uncovering deeper threats and shifting alliances along the way.

“Crimson Desert” is currently available across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as Apple Mac. The company is also continuing development on upcoming titles including “DokeV” and “PLAN 8.”
