Malaga Work in Progress Lineup Unveiled

The eighth edition of Malaga Work in Progress, the industry-focused section of the Malaga Film Festival, is set to spotlight 16 Spanish and Ibero-American films currently in post-production. Running from March 18-20, this segment is a key platform for emerging talent and established filmmakers alike, aimed at fostering the completion and international promotion of projects from Spain, Portugal and Latin America.

Alongside the Spanish titles, Malaga WIP will also feature four Chilean films presented by FICVIÑA, under the banner of the FICVIÑA Showcase label.

This year’s slate includes eight Spanish productions, with a special focus on two films from the autonomous community of Murcia, which takes center stage in the festival’s Territory section. These films, alongside the international lineup, will be presented to an audience of key industry professionals, such as sales agents, festival programmers and international fund representatives, all of whom will help champion the films’ global reach.

On March 21, the films will be further showcased in a pitching session, during which project representatives will pitch their films to potential collaborators.

Two juries will deliberate over the winners of the Ibero-American and Spanish Malaga Festival Awards, each endowed with a €5,000 ($5,430) cash prize. The Malaga WIP Spain jury will include director and editor Alejandra Almirón, EFM head of marketing and advertising Jana Wolff and FICValdivia director Raúl Camargo. The Malaga WIP Iberoamerican jury will feature Mard el Plata programmer Paola Buontempo, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) director Marco Muhletaler, and Casa América cinema programmer Teresa Toledo.

Malaga WIP has long served as a launchpad for upcoming films to embark on a successful festival run, which regularly includes a return to the Spanish fest once the film is completed. Notably, “Jone Baztutean” (“Jone a veces”), directed by Sara Fontova, won the Aracne Digital Cinema Award at last year’s WIP and is now part of the official Feature Films Selection. Another standout is Pablo Maqueda’s “Dear Nanni” (“Caro Nanni”), which competed in the 2023 official project selection and now joins the WIP program.

Malaga WIP is part of the broader Spanish Screenings Content 2025, a major event for promoting Spanish cinema globally. Organized by the Malaga City Council and the Malaga Festival, the initiative continues to grow as an essential marketplace for the promotion of Spanish-language films, in collaboration with ICAA, CAACI, IBERMEDIA and FIPCA.

Tens of thousands of dollars in post-production, sound, lighting, distribution and other prizes are also up for grabs, provided by companies including Arcane Digital Cinema, Chemistry, Cine y Tele, E-28, Latamcinema.com, Music Library, Río Bravo, Sideral and Yagán Films.
