LIV Golf is packing up.
The professional men’s golf tour, founded in 2021 as a competitor to the PGA Tour, announced it is officially closing up shop after months of speculation over its draining finances.
According to a Nov. 5 announcement on the league’s website, in April CEO Scott O’Neil and other LIV Golf leadership began working with independent advisors to “identify the best, value-maximizing path forward for the Company and its stakeholders.”
However, “in light of the current circumstances,” the announcement noted, “we believe shifting toward an orderly wind-down is the most responsible path forward for the League at this time. The dedication of LIV Golf’s players, employees, partners, and fans made everything the League accomplished possible.”
In his own statement, O’Neil reflected on building the league up from the rough.
“LIV Golf was fun, demanding, inspiring, at times challenging—but always rewarding,” he said. “We created memories that I hope will inspire a new generation of fans to follow, play, and fall in love with this great game.”
And though the league is headed towards a wind down, the announcement did note the company will remain open to and consider any “value-maximum alternatives” that might arise.
