Formula 1 hits the track for the final time before its summer break at one of the most popular venues on the calendar as the world championship fight rolls on to the Hungarian Grand Prix, live on Sky Sports.
The season’s 11th round in Budapest is the last race for four weeks and therefore a key chance for the contenders to sign off on a high before they head on their holidays.
Kimi Antonelli will be full of confidence after a superb victory last time out in Belgium while his Mercedes team-mate George Russell retired after tangling with Lewis Hamilton on the opening lap.
Antonelli is 45 points ahead of Hamilton and 50 points in front of Russell in the Drivers’ Championship and is likely to be the driver to beat at the Hungaroring.
But, the track characteristics should suit Ferrari as there are lots of corners so don’t rule out Hamilton and Charles Leclerc having a shot at victory.
McLaren have claimed 1-2s in each of the past two years and the world champions will be hoping their major upgrade package can vault them into the fight at the front.
Hungarian GP track – Hungaroring
The Hungarian Grand Prix has been on the F1 calendar since 1986 and is one of the most popular events for fans.
It is renowned for its tight, twisty nature and was dubbed as ‘Monaco without the barriers’ due to the difficulty of overtaking.
However, it has thrown up some classic races over the years, including Michael Schumacher’s incredible strategic win in 1998, Jenson Button’s maiden victory in 2006, mixed conditions causing chaos in 2011 and 2014, plus Esteban Ocon’s incredible triumph for Alpine in 2021.
Turn One is the prime overtaking spot, although battles often rage on down to Turn 2 and up the hill towards Turn Four. The middle sector is all about mechanical grip and keeping the tyres alive for the last few slow corners.
Hungarian GP weather in Budapest
In keeping with much of the European summer so far, dry conditions are expected throughout the Budapest weekend, although temperatures, while warm, are not forecast to be quite as sweltering as at some other events recently.
