Hulu has given out a pilot order to the drama “Young Americans,” Variety has learned.
The pilot hails from writers and executive producers Chris Hutton and Eddie O’Keefe. Bruce Miller is onboard as an executive producer via White Oak Pictures, with White Oak’s Priscilla Porianda also executive producing. 20th Television is the studio.
The logline for the show states, “As the children of the nation’s elite battle it out at Capitol Crest Academy in Washington D.C., their teenage dramas begin to mirror the larger political games of their parents. Amidst the secrets, scandals, and deadly ambitions, a forbidden romance between two students from opposing political families threatens to escalate tensions to a breaking point.”
This is one of several pilots that Hulu currently has in contention for series pickups. The streamer is also currently prepping pilots for the dark comedy “Lex” as well as “Durango” starring Cooper Hoffman and Kathryn Newton and “Chicks” starring Ellen Pompeo among others. Hulu’s Onyx Collective also has Ryan Coogler’s “X-Files” reboot pilot in the works starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel.
Hutton and O’Keefe previously created the Quibi series “When the Streetlights Go On,” which starred Mark Duplass and Sophie Thatcher. The show was based on a feature script they co-wrote that made it to the Black List. They have also developed projects for a number of platforms, including Apple, HBO, Amazon, and Paramount+. O’Keefe previously wrote and directed the feature “Shangri-La Suite” starring Burt Reynolds, Emily Browning, and Ron Livingston.
Miller is a frequent collaborator with Hulu given the success of his series adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Miller that show after six seasons in 2025. It received 77 Emmy nominations during its run, winning 15. Those wins include multiple acting wins, best writing for a drama series (Miller), and best drama series. Most recently, Miller created and launched the sequel series “The Testaments” on Hulu, with that show quickly earning a Season 2 renewal. Miller is also known for his work on shows like “ER,” “Eureka,” and “Alphas.” He is also currently developing projects including “RetroActive” and “Suspect” at Hulu.
