Greene noted that while “nothing can undo the profound loss experienced by the Reiner family and those who loved them,” she said her team will “continue to approach this case with care, compassion and a commitment to ensuring that Nick’s circumstances are fully understood as the legal process moves forward.”
In addition to the decision regarding the death penalty, Hochman shared that Jake and Romy were also opposed to unsealing the grand jury transcripts of Nick’s trial.
“They have expressed a strong desire for these transcripts to remain sealed,” the district attorney said. “They basically have said that the disclosure to the public and the media of the details and evidence of the killing of their parents will cause them additional trauma and harm.”
Hochman does not believe “unsealing the transcripts will cause such prejudice,” but they have deferred the decision to the court on whether or not to unseal the transcripts.
Both sides are set to return to court on Oct. 7 to discuss the grand jury transcripts as well as other pre-trial issues, according to NBC News.
Since the death of their parents, Jake and Romy have rarely discussed their brother’s alleged involvement. However, Jake did share that Nick and Rob had made the 2015 film Being Charlie together as a way to work through his brother’s addiction and mental health struggles.
