DGA Awards Date Set for January 2027

The Directors Guild of America has announced the 79th annual DGA Awards will take place Saturday, Jan. 30, 2027, honoring directorial achievements across film, television and documentaries.

The upcoming ceremony will take place nine days after the announcement of the 99th Academy Awards nominations, serving as a key, early barometer of which film and its accompanying auteur could take home the Oscar.

The DGA date comes among the wave of awards calendar news in the last few weeks. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has set the 99th Oscars for Sunday, March 14, 2027, and the landmark 100th ceremony for Sunday, March 5, 2028. SAG-AFTRA’s Actor Awards are scheduled for Feb. 28, 2027, and Feb. 20, 2028, while the Producers Guild of America will hold its ceremony Feb. 27, 2027, and Feb. 19, 2028. The DGA did not provide a date for its 2028 event.

The most recent ceremony, held earlier this year and hosted for the first time by Kumail Nanjiani, saw Paul Thomas Anderson claim the top prize for outstanding directorial achievement in theatrical feature film for “One Battle After Another.” Anderson subsequently won best director at the Oscars, with the film also taking best picture.

The DGA Award has long served as one of the most reliable indicators of the Oscar race for best director. Since the guild’s founding, its top film prize has aligned with the Academy’s choice all but eight times. The most recent split came in 2019, when Sam Mendes won the DGA Award for “1917” but lost the Oscar to Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite,” which also claimed best picture.

Unlike many awards bodies, the DGA’s signature medallion recognizes the full directorial team, honoring not only the director but also assistant directors, unit production managers and key crew members.

The 2026 contender slate already shows immense promise, thanks to box-office hits such as “Project Hail Mary” from Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and highly anticipated potential vehicles such as Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Three” and Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “Digger.”

Additional details, including nominations and venue information, will be announced at a later date.
