The West Ham United Fan Advisory Board (FAB) has called on David Sullivan not to attend the club’s home matches, warning his presence could become a “distraction” and a potential security concern.
In a statement, the FAB said it remained concerned that Sullivan attending matches at the London Stadium would cause “offence and upset” to some supporters and could provoke negative reactions from fans.
Sullivan resigned as a director and joint chairman of West Ham in June, before the publication of an investigation by The Times and BBC Panorama into sexual misconduct allegations. He has strongly denied all allegations of wrongdoing.
The group said it had raised concerns that Sullivan’s presence would be unwelcome among many supporters and could require increased security measures at a time when both the club and stadium face financial pressures. The statement referenced reports that Sullivan had already been advised not to attend matches by the stadium operators.
The FAB also pointed to West Ham’s ground regulations, which state that entry can be refused to any individual whose presence could constitute a source of danger, nuisance or annoyance to others.
While acknowledging Sullivan remains a significant shareholder in the club, the supporters’ body said it was disappointed the club had not taken steps to prevent him from attending matches. It added that his attendance risked reopening tensions that had marked the latter stages of his leadership at the club.
The statement also criticised what it described as Sullivan putting “personal interest before the good of the club”, despite what it said was high-level advice for him not to attend.
However, the FAB reiterated its support for West Ham’s current executive team, praising what it described as improved dialogue between supporters and the club and expressing confidence in the direction of the new leadership.
West Ham begin their home campaign against Portsmouth in the EFL Cup on Saturday. The FAB called on supporters to focus their attention on backing the team and creating a positive atmosphere at the London Stadium.
West Ham United have been approached for comment by Sky Sports News.
London Stadium operators make Sullivan request
Earlier this week we reported that the operator of the London Stadium had recommended to the club that Sullivan does not go to games, due to potential for fan unrest. The stadium operator asked for advance notice of any planned visits by Sullivan in order to implement extra safety and operational measures.
A London Stadium spokesperson said: “Following media reports at the end of the season regarding a safeguarding matter being managed by the club, London Stadium sought further information to ensure it could fulfil its own safeguarding responsibilities.
“Based on the information provided by the club, we understand the matter was investigated and that the club does not consider there to be an ongoing safeguarding risk associated with Mr Sullivan attending the stadium.
“However, given the potential for demonstrations and anti-social behaviour by some spectators, we have recommended to the club that he does not attend. We have also requested advance notice of any planned attendance so that appropriate safety and operational measures can be put in place.
“For operational reasons we will not comment on if we have had notice that he will attend.”
West Ham United declined to comment.
