Clio Barnard’s ‘I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning’ Sells Widely

Fresh off winning the audience award at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, Clio Barnard’s “I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning” has secured a raft of international sales, with Paris-based sales company Charades handling worldwide rights.

The film, which earned the top audience prize in the Cannes sidebar, has been picked up across multiple territories following its market launch by Charades.

Deals closed to date include Pyramide for France, Curzon for the U.K., Cherry Pickers for Benelux, Adso Films for Spain, Weird Wave for Greece, Angel Film for Denmark, Folkets Bio for Scandinavia, A-One Films for the Baltics, MCF for the Adriatics and Bulgaria, Cinobo for Poland, Lev Cinema for Israel, New Select Co. for Japan, Hooray Films for Taiwan and Aardwolf for airline rights.

“I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning” marks the latest feature from BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Barnard, whose previous credits include “Ali & Ava” and “Dark River.”

Adapted by “Die My Love” and “Hunger” writer Enda Walsh from Keiran Goddard’s novel of the same name, the drama stars Anthony Boyle (“Say Nothing,” “Masters of the Air”), Joe Cole (“Gangs of London”), Jay Lycurgo (“Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself”), Daryl McCormack (“Good Luck to You, Leo Grande”) and Lola Petticrew (“Say Nothing”). Millie Brady, Lucie Shorthouse and James Eeles also feature in the ensemble cast.

The film follows five childhood friends — Patrick, Shiv, Rian, Oli and Conor — who once dreamed of escaping their circumstances and building better lives. Now in their 30s, they find the futures they imagined slowly slipping away.

Produced by Tracy O’Riordan through Moonspun Films, the project continues Barnard’s longstanding collaboration with the producer. It was developed with BBC Film, which co-financed the picture alongside the BFI, awarding National Lottery funding. Curzon Film is also a production partner and will distribute the film in the U.K., alongside TPC.

Executive producers include Barnard, Walsh, Goddard, Claudia Yusef for BBC Film, Mia Bays for the BFI, Ali Jazayeri and Keith Kehoe for TPC, Louisa Dent and Philip Knatchbull for Curzon Film, as well as Yohann Comte, Carole Baraton and Lucie Desquiens for Charades.
