Captain Jarrod Bowen scored twice as West Ham’s 3-2 win over Bolton took them top of the Championship on goal difference. The England international opened the scoring after 13 minutes and earned his side a first win at Bolton for 31 years with his second 13 minutes from time.
In between, Wanderers, beaten for a fourth successive outing, equalised through midfielder Ethan Erhahon’s maiden goal for the club and they looked on course for a ninth successive league victory over the Hammers when Ruben Rodrigues converted a 27th-minute penalty. Instead, Konstantinos Mavropanos levelled with a 31st-minute header and Bowen completed the comeback.
Cyle Larin scored his fifth goal of the season as Southampton beat Swansea 3-1 to beat the side who were top of the table for the second home match in a row. Larin, who is the joint-top scorer in the Championship, found the net either side of Finn Azaz and Leo Scienza strikes to make it 13 games unbeaten at St Mary’s.
Watford shook off an awful first-half display to grab a 2-1 victory over Preston, who suffered their fifth defeat in six league games. Callum Lang had put the visitors ahead in the sixth minute as they threatened to overrun the Hornets, who hit back with two second-half goals in seven minutes from Edo Kayembe and Mamadou Doumbia.
Wrexham’s wait for a home win goes on after they were held to a 1-1 draw by winless Burnley who sit one place off the bottom of the table. Jacques Ekomie headed in his second goal for the club since joining in a £7m deal from Angers, cancelling out Zeki Amdouni’s first-half effort for the Clarets who at least ended a run of seven straight away defeats dating back to last term.
But it was a result that does little to help either side in their pursuit of promotion, with Wrexham having lost the momentum they carried into last season while Burnley face bigger problems after relegation from the top flight, having won only one league game since October. Former England striker Jamie Vardy joined this week, but the 39-year-old was suspended for this match as a result of yellow cards collected during his time with Italian side Cremonese.
Sheffield United returned to winning ways after a display of ruthless finishing secured a 2-1 win at Blackburn. All the goals came in a first half that Rovers dominated and deservedly took the lead in through Kristi Montgomery’s first goal for the club on 20 minutes. The Blades turned the game on its head with goals from their only two shots of the half as Tom Cannon stroked home a second on this ground in two weeks in the 35th minute. Sydie Peck rifled home his first of the season a minute before the break to complete the turnaround.
Cardiff’s winless start to the season continued as Stoke held on for a 1-1 draw in the Welsh capital and their first away point since January. Stoke had hope of an away-day success after a run of nine straight Championship defeats when Ben Johnson scored midway through the first half. But the Potters came under fierce pressure in the second half and Joel Colwill’s headed home for Cardiff hosts who hit a post three times. The draw – Cardiff’s fourth in six games – was enough to take the home side out of the relegation zone, while Stoke slip to 15th.
