Championship roundup: Priske’s double gives Birmingham victory over Lincoln | Championship

August Priske scored twice as Birmingham bounced back from defeat at Cardiff to beat Lincoln 3-1 at Sincil Bank and move – at least temporarily – into second. The Dane scored either side of the break, with Alex Cochrane securing the win after the Imps substitute Tom Bayliss had reduced the deficit.

Birmingham went ahead in the 16th minute with a goal owing to some fortune, as a Blues pass was inadvertently directed towards his own goal by Yunus Konak, straight to Priske on the edge of the box and he swivelled and fired a low shot into the bottom corner.

The Blues’ Ethan Laird could have seen red after half an hour after attempting to bring down a clearance but booting Ben House in the face as the Lincoln forward attempted to seize possession and nip in towards goal. Lewis Smith produced only a yellow card.

League One roundup: Huddersfield thump Bradford

Show

Huddersfield seized the bragging rights in the West Yorkshire derby as the leaders secured an emphatic 3-0 win at Bradford, who had their captain, Antoni Sarcevic, sent off.

A tremendous overhead kick from Joe Low gave the visitors an early lead before two goals in six minutes at the start of the second half from Derensili Sanches Fernandes and Joe Taylor made sure of the win. Bradford went down to 10 men in the 69th minute when Sarcevic was given a second booking for pulling back Ilias Bronkhorst.

Plymouth stayed a point ahead of their fellow League One high-fliers Reading after the two teams played out a goalless draw at Home Park. Neither side could find a winner and they slip further behind Huddersfield.

Leyton Orient returned to winning ways as they confidently dispatched Cambridge 3-0 at Brisbane Road. Efforts from Rarmani Edmonds-Green, Jaze Kabia and Aaron Connolly stopped a run of two straight losses growing longer and handed the visitors only their second defeat in 11 games.

On the hour mark, Blues doubled their lead. A long throw into the box was flicked on and there was Priske to slide in and poke the ball past George Wickens. Three minutes later, though, Lincoln reduced the deficit through Bayliss. Mikkel Ladefoged laid the ball off to the substitute and he arrowed a ball into the corner of the net.

Cochrane was then given too much time and space in the centre of the pitch to run forward and plant a left-footed shot past Wickens after 73 minutes to make it 3-1.

Norwich launched a storming second-half comeback to beat Watford 3-2 and make it back-to-back league wins, while their opponents could drop into the bottom three later on Saturday.

The Dutch striker Myron Boadu opened his account for the visitors with two goals as Watford took a 2-0 lead into the interval against a misfiring home team. However, the Canaries looked a different side after the interval and scored three times in 17 minutes to turn the game on its head, with Ben Chrisene, Anthony Musaba and Paris Maghoma getting the goals.

It was another unhappy afternoon for the under-pressure Watford manager, Alessio Dionisi, and if Burnley win at home to Peterborough then his side will be in the relegation zone.

Stoke continued their impressive run with a 2-0 home victory over basement side Preston. Goals from Ben Wilmot and Jack McGlynn did the damage as Mark Robins’s in-form team claimed a seventh win in their last 10 league games.

League Two: Grimsby beat York in seven-goal thriller

Show

Grimsby struck three times in 12 minutes late in the second half to seal a 5-2 triumph over York in an entertaining clash at Blundell Park.

The hosts took a 13th-minute lead as a good team move down the left flank got Cameron McJannet in position to cross for Andy Cook, who headed in. The visitors replied in the 18th minute and it was the former Grimsby man Alex Hunt who netted with a rifled low effort into the bottom corner.

York went in front when Jack Hunt curled in a shot after cutting in from the right side of the area in the 28th minute, but just three minutes later Iwan Morgan levelled the scores again with an effort on the rebound.

Grimsby scored a third in the 75th minute as Morgan delivered to the far post for McJannet to head in. Josh Andrews added a fourth on the counterattack three minutes later and Geza David Turi rounded off a fine second half for the hosts with a fifth in the 86th minute.

Three early goals helped Port Vale ease to a 4-2 win at home to Rochdale. Onel Hernández opened the scoring inside 90 seconds, gathering Kyle Dempsey’s through-ball and finding the bottom corner. Vale doubled their lead after 11 minutes. Aden Flint tripped Hernández and George Byers fired the resulting penalty past Sam Waller. Dempsey’s shot was then parried by Waller and Jordan Gabriel reacted first to slot home the rebound.

With the game over as a contest, the second half produced few chances but ended with a flurry of goals. Dale’s Ian Henderson headed in after 82 minutes before Keyrol Figueroa restored Vale’s three-goal cushion with a simple tap-in four minutes from time. Charlie Tasker gave the scoreline a degree of respectability, slotting in Dale’s second goal with the last kick of the game. On Friday, Ben Brereton Díaz’s first goal of the season sealed a deserved 1-0 win for Sheffield United against Wrexham at Bramall Lane. The Chile forward, in his third spell on loan with the Blades, struck the only goal in the first half as Chris Wilder’s side notched their third win in five games to climb to within a point of the top eight.

The Blades are trying to make up lost ground after winning only one of their first five league games, while Wrexham, lacking confidence and inspiration, slipped to a fourth league defeat in their last seven. Phil Parkinson, the Wrexham manager, said: “We were slow on the ball and our intensity levels weren’t where they needed to be. Second half, we did loads better.”
