“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” came out swinging at the domestic box office.
“Brand New Day” grossed an astounding $168 million from 4,487 North American theaters on Friday, securing the biggest opening day ever for a domestic release. The record previously belonged to 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame, which earned $157 million on its first day in theaters. Sony has the film reaching $325 million by Sunday, but rival estimates have the film climbing as high as $358 million. That figure would give “Brand New Day” the biggest North American debut of all time.
“Endgame” holds the title of best North American opening ever with $357 million. The silver metal slot belongs to 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” with $260 million. 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” had the third best with $257 million, followed by 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” with $247 million.
In Tom Holland‘s previous “Spider-Man” film, “No Way Home,” Peter Parker had Doctor Strange erase everyone’s memory so no one on Earth knows who he is. In “Brand New Day,” Peter must learn to fight on without any of his closest allies, including his girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) and his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon). Cast members for “Brand New Day” include Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Liza Colón-Zayas and Tramell Tillman.
Second place on Friday went to “The Odyssey,” which made $14.5 million as it entered its third weekend in North American theaters. By Sunday, the ancient Greek epic should add $51 million (a 43% drop from last week’s earnings) and bring its domestic total to $395 million.
“Toy Story 5” took third on Friday with $1.8 million domestically. The animated sequel is targeting an estimated $6.2 million by Sunday, which would push its North American haul to $461 million through four weekends of release.
Rounding out the Friday top five were “Minions & Monsters” and “Moana.” “Minions & Monsters” landed in fourth, adding $1.66 million on Friday. Universal has the film making $5.6 million by Sunday. That would put its domestic earnings at $168 million through 5 weekends in theaters. Finally, “Moana” landed at No. 5 with $1.6 million domestically on Friday. Through the weekend, it should gross about $5.3 million, pushing its domestic revenues to $114 million through four weekends in theaters.
