Brand New Day Scores Second Biggest Global Debut, Nears $1 Billion

All hail Peter Parker.

Sony and Marvel’s web-slinging adventure “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” climbed to $927 million globally, a mind-blowing, jaw-dropping and totally epic opening weekend haul. Few films manage to earn that much by the end of their box office runs, much less after three days on the big screen. It’s the second-largest worldwide debut of all time, trailing only 2019’s Marvel titan “Avengers: Endgame” with $1.2 billion. Those titles reign far above the third-biggest global opening, which belongs to 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” with $640 million globally.

“Brand New Day,” the fourth comic-book adaptation starring Tom Holland as Marvel’s friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man, opened to $572 million internationally from 66 markets, as well as $355 million at the domestic box office. Overseas, China secured the biggest start with $121 million, followed by the United Kingdom with $49 million, Mexico with $38.3 million and South Korea with $25 million. The movie set opening-weekend benchmarks in several individual territories, including France with $26.6 million, India with $31.8 million, Brazil with $23.8 million and Spain with $15.6 million.

With such a significant launch in China, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is poised to eventually surpass $2 billion at the global box office — a milestone that only seven movies in history have ever surpassed. “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the predecessor to “Brand New Day,” managed to generate a staggering $1.9 billion in 2021 without playing in China. Although the country has been hit-or-miss with recent Hollywood blockbusters, Peter Parker still resonates with mainland audiences.

Premium large formats have been all the rage, and audiences were eager to watch “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” on some of the biggest and brightest screens. Although the movie didn’t play on Imax, where Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has the entire network for three weekends, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” established new records for Dolby ($10 million domestically), 4DX ($17 million globally) and ScreenX ($14.4 million globally).

Destin Daniel Cretton (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) directed “Brand New Day,” which takes place after Peter Parker made the difficult decision to erase himself from everyone’s memory at the end of “No Way Home.” All the action picks up as a mysterious entity threatens New York City. Meanwhile, Spider-Man is struggling with his mutating powers — and the fact that his girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) and best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) are making memories at MIT with zero recollection of their former pal. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has great reviews and positive audience scores, earning a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and “A” grade on CinemaScore exit polls. Without much competition, the comic-book sequel is poised to dominate on the big screen throughout the rest of summer.

“We’re incredibly grateful to audiences for embracing the bold creative and deeply emotional vision Destin took with this film,” says producer Amy Pascal. “It’s exciting to see such a powerful response to a story that never lost sight of what makes Peter Parker so enduring—his humanity. This remarkable opening reinforces that moviegoers are hungry for stories that are both spectacular and deeply human, and we’re thrilled to see that resonate on such a global scale.”
