The 22-year-old is the club’s eighth summer arrival, having signed a four-year contract, with Rangers holding the option of extending that deal by a further 12 months.

Derek McInnes sets out his targets for his first season as Rangers manager ahead of their Scottish Premiership opener at Dundee United, live on Sky Sports

Manager Derek McInnes commented: “We’re really pleased to bring Olwethu to the club. He’s a player we have watched closely, and we feel he has all the attributes to make a real impact here, while also continuing to develop his game.

“For someone so young, he’s already gained experience in different environments. He is a strong, physical and confident defender, and I look forward to seeing him settle into the squad and show what he is capable of as a Rangers player.”

Who else could join Rangers?

Rangers have now signed eight players this summer, with Vanja Dragojevic, Lawrence Shankland, Cammy Devlin, Ben Godfrey, Ross McCrorie, Dan Neil and Ivor Pandur joining before Makhanya.

However, they are now working on adding an attacking option as boss McInnes searches for more creativity.

Sky Sports News revealed Coventry City winger Jahnoah Markelo is one option under consideration.

The Ibrox side will also look to add more defensive options too, with the likes of John Souttar among the players who could leave the club.
