Wanda Sykes‘ next stand-up comedy special will debut on Netflix on May 19. Titled “Legacy,” it marks Sykes’ third hour for the streamer.
Per Netflix’s logline, “With the trademark wit and fearless insight that have earned her multiple Emmy wins and nominations, Sykes delivers an hour of bold, smart, and laugh-out-loud comedy that cements her legacy as a comedy icon.”
“Legacy” is directed by Julie Dash (“Daughters of the Dust”) and was filmed in Virginia at Sykes’ alma mater, Hampton University. The special is produced by Page Hurwitz and Sykes via their banner Push It Productions, which has backed other stand-up specials from comics like Michelle Buteau and Fortune Feimster, as well as the Netflix sitcom “The Upshaws,” which Sykes co-created with Regina Y. Hicks. Sykes starred in that series opposite Mike Epps and Kim Fields. The show, which follows a working-class family from Indiana pursuing the American dream, ended in January after five seasons on the streamer.
Sykes is one of the most recognizable names in comedy. Her last two specials, 2023’s “I’m an Entertainer” and 2019’s “Not Normal,” both debuted on Netflix. Her 2016 special “What Happened… Ms. Sykes?” was produced by MGM+. Prior to that, she had specials on HBO and Comedy Central.
She hosted “The Wanda Sykes Show” and led the early-2000s sitcoms “Wanda at Large” and “Wanda Does It.” She had memorable roles in “The Other Two,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Black-ish,” as well as dozens of other film and TV projects. She won an Emmy as a writer on “The Chris Rock Show.”
