TikTok Supreme Court Update: Court Upholds Planned Ban as Shut Down Date Looms | Politics, TikTok | Just Jared: Celebrity News and Gossip


TikTok got some bad news from the Supreme Court days before it is supposed to go offline in the United States.

If you were unaware, a law passed in 2024 mandated that the social media platform be removed from the app store if its Chinese parent company ByteDance didn’t sell off its ownership. The ban is supposed to go into effect on January 19.

The social media company appealed the decision to the Supreme Court. However, on Friday (January 17), it was confirmed that the court had rejected to hear the case.

Variety reported on the court’s decision, noting that this does seemingly mean that the app will have to move forward with shutting down in the United States.

However, TikTok might end up getting a reprieve from President Joe Biden. The president, who is exiting office on January 20, said that his team would not enforce the ban and would leave it up to President-Elect Donald Trump‘s administration.
