‘The Office’ Star Brian Baumgartner Got ‘Really Mad’ Over Cut Joke

“The Office” alum Brian Baumgartner is revisiting a rare behind-the-scenes dispute from his nine-season run as Kevin Malone, revealing he once pushed back against editors who cut what he considered to be an “amazing” joke.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Baumgartner reflected on the unusually collaborative environment of the NBC comedy, where actors were often encouraged to pitch ideas and contribute to character development. While not every suggestion made it to air, he said most creative exchanges were welcomed, with one notable exception that left him “really mad.”

The moment in question came during the Season 5 episode “Baby Shower,” featuring Melora Hardin as Jan Levinson opposite Steve Carell’s Michael Scott. In the scene, Kevin awkwardly questions Jan about her sperm donor, delivering a punchline that implied he may have been involved. Baumgartner described the line as “pound-for-pound an amazing joke,” but said it was ultimately removed in the editing process.

According to Baumgartner, the decision stemmed from network concerns that the gag could confuse viewers or suggest a storyline involving Kevin. He disagreed, arguing the joke worked on its own and didn’t require narrative follow-through, calling the hesitation an example of “overthinking.”

Though he “lost the argument” at the time, Baumgartner now sees the situation differently. The joke has since been restored in streaming versions of the episode, a move he views as long-overdue validation.

“It’s interesting, you can’t watch that episode now and not see that moment happen. So it’s a little bit of vindication for me,” he said.
