Just when he thought he was out…they pull him back into the crypt.
John Hannah, who played an erudite thief in 1999’s “The Mummy” and its two sequels, will return to the scene of the tomb raiding in the upcoming franchise reboot. He joins Brendan Fraser, who played a daring adventurer in those films, as well as Rachel Weisz, who portrayed Hannah’s sister.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are better known as Radio Silence, are directing the revival from a script by David Coggeshall, the writer of “The Family Plan.” Radio Silence is responsible for the “Ready or Not” films and also helped revitalize the “Scream” franchise with 2022’s “Scream” and 2023’s “Scream VI.” Universal is backing the film, which will hit theaters on May 19, 2028. Plot details are, for lack of a better phrase, being kept under wraps.
Hannah’s film credits include “Sliding Doors,” “Another Mother’s Son” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” for which he was nominated for a BAFTA. On television, he has recently appeared in season 6 of “Black Mirror,” Netflix’s “The Decameron” and HBO’s “The Last of Us.” Hannah recently finished shooting on the feature film “Bedlam” with Peter Serafinowicz and Scott Adkins and also features in the 2026 British comedy “The Incomer” alongside Domhnall Gleeson. He will next star in the six-part comedy-drama “Death in Benidorm.”
Executive Vice President of Production Development Jay Polidoro and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the production of “The Mummy” for Universal.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Hannah’s return. Hannah is represented by Artist’s Rights Group and Felker Toczek Suddleson LLP.
