NBA: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Milwaukee Bucks potentially heading for divorce as war of words ramps up

It’s all getting very messy between Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks.

The NBA has had to step in because of the dispute between the two-time league MVP and the team he led to their first championship in 40 years back in 2021.

Here’s the state of play:

Giannis says he is healthy and available and wants to play.
The Bucks‘ line is that he is progressing but not yet healthy or medically clear to do so.
The NBA investigation is ongoing and says certain facts remain disputed.

Antetokounmpo hasn’t played since leaving a March 15 victory over the Indiana Pacers after landing awkwardly on a dunk. The Bucks released an injury report Saturday ruling him out for Sunday’s matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies, which will mark the 11th straight game he has missed and Sunday will mark the 42nd game Antetokounmpo has missed this season, an unwanted career-high.

“The NBA’s Player Participation Policy investigation into the Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo is ongoing and certain facts remain in dispute,” an NBA spokesperson said. “The investigation has found that the Bucks scheduled Giannis to work out last week in three-on-three scrimmages as part of his return-to-play process, but he declined to participate. There is a disagreement as to whether the team requested that Giannis participate in a group workout earlier this week, and the league is continuing to monitor the situation.”

ESPN first reported that an investigation was taking place.

Key moments in the Giannis-Bucks dispute

Mar 15 — Giannis hyperextends his knee. Plays it down immediately.
Mar 18 — Head coach Doc Rivers confirms imaging shows no structural damage. That evening, ESPN reports the Bucks want to shut Giannis down for the remainder of the season. He refuses.
Mar 20 — Co-owner Wes Edens publicly frames the summer as binary, saying Giannis will be extended or traded.
Mar 24 — The National Basketball Players Association publicly rebukes Milwaukee, citing tanking concerns.
Mar 26 — Rivers maintains the club position: Giannis is progressing but not medically cleared to play.
Mar 30 — Team-mate Bobby Portis tells a live TV audience he doesn’t expect Giannis to play again this season, framing the decision in business rather than medical terms.
Apr 3 — Giannis goes fully public. He says he is healthy, calls being benched an insult, and suggests the relationship with the organisation needs repair.
Apr 4 — NBA investigation confirmed. Bucks reportedly tell NBA he refused 3-on-3 scrimmages. Giannis says publicly he has no idea what is going on.
Apr 5 — The league confirms the investigation is ongoing and that key facts remain disputed.

Since that Indiana game, the Bucks have ruled Antetokounmpo out due to left knee hyperextension and a bone bruise. Antetokounmpo has been participating in pregame warmups lately with no apparent limits.

“I’m healthy,” Antetokounmpo told reporters before the Bucks’ 133-101 loss to the Boston Celtics on Friday. “I hate it when people force me to do things against my nature. I’m a player. I get paid to play.”

The Bucks were eliminated from postseason contention on March 28, snapping their string of nine straight playoff appearances – and a lot of that has been to do with their blue chip superstar, who has played his entire 13-year career with Milwaukee, after being selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2013 draft.

“You know who you’re dealing with,” Antetokounmpo said Friday. “So, for somebody to come and tell me to not play or to not compete, it’s like a slap in my face.”

Why Giannis might not play for the Bucks again

This whole dispute comes amid much speculation regarding Antetokounmpo’s future with the Bucks.

The Greek Freak becomes eligible to sign a four-year contract extension worth up to $275m in October. If he doesn’t sign the extension, Antetokounmpo could become a free agent after the 2026-27 season, or the Bucks could decide to trade him beforehand.

Trade talk is ramping up – he will have, and does have, suitors aplenty.

Indeed, team-mate Bobby Portis explicitly linked the risk of a return to trade value on an appearance on FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back”.

He said: “If y’all talking about trading him, you don’t want any injury to knock value off or whatever. That’s just business-wise, and then player-wise, obviously, you gotta look at just the total picture of what’s going on. We’re 10 games behind for the 10th seed and (with) nine games left, we can’t even make up ground.”

Bucks coach Doc Rivers said after Monday’s game that he wishes this disagreement had been kept between the two parties. Rivers added that “this is a grown man’s game, and it should be handled that way by everybody.”

“I just don’t like that this is so public,” Rivers said. “This is where grown men get in a room and they talk it out. Whether they agree or disagree, that doesn’t matter. But this should not be public, and I don’t like that.”

It’s been left to Rivers – who was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2026 amid this backdrop – to face the media over this issue. The Bucks have never given a direct on-record quote defending themselves. Every club position is reported via sources or investigators – in complete contrast to Giannis himself.

And GM Jon Horst has been completely invisible throughout a dispute of this magnitude. That’s not an accident.

“I don’t know where the relationship goes,” Antetokounmpo said. “We’ve got to go to couples therapy.”

Perhaps, though, it’s going to end in divorce.
