Mike Judge to Receive Annecy Honorary Cristal

After honoring Michel Gondry, Joanna Quinn and Matt Groening last year, the Annecy Animation Film Festival has unveiled its first 2026 Honorary Cristal recipient.

Prolific producer, writer and animator Mike Judge, co-creator of “King of the Hill” and creator of “Beavis and Butt-Head,” will receive the Honorary Award during this year’s edition, which takes place June 21–27.

Born in 1962 in Ecuador and raised in New Mexico, Mike Judge graduated from UCSD in 1985 where he studied physics. But as he lost interest in building his career in science, he started to dabble with animation in the late 1980s, a perfect setting for what would become his trademark humor and style.

At 29, Judge produced his first cartoons, which grabbed attention thanks to the touring presentation of shorts, “Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation.” MTV picked up two of Judge’s shorts, including “Frog Baseball,” a film marking the first appearance of what would become two of the actor-director-producer-animator’s main characters: Beavis and Butt-Head. A year later, MTV had commissioned a full series, which became extremely popular and now boasts 300+ episodes and is still ongoing.

In 1995, as “Beavis and Butt-Head” was already becoming the most viewed animated series on MTV, Judge teamed up with five-time Emmy-award-winning writer, showrunner, director and producer Greg Daniels to create the Emmy Award winning series “King of the Hill,” a now U.S. animated classic. Daniels, a former writer on “The Simpsons,” brought his unique writing depth to Judge’s era-defining television comedy. After a 13-season run from 1997 to 2010, “King of the Hill” received a long-awaited 14th season last year on Hulu, with Saladin K. Patterson as executive producer and showrunner.

According to the Annecy Festival, this Honorary Cristal recognizes “Judge’s illustrious career spanning more than three decades and his outstanding contributions to the art of animation.” Marcel Jean, Annecy Festival artistic director, added that Judge is “a cultural icon who has created legendary characters, pioneered new formats, and seamlessly transitioned from animation to live action,” referring to Judge’s written-directed classics such as 2006 science fiction cult comedy “Idiocracy” and acclaimed series “Silicon Valley.”

Last October, and maybe anticipating this Honorary Cristal, Jean penned his own history of U.S. animated TV gems in the French animation magazine Blink Blank, where he underlined Judge’s outstanding contributions to the art of animation and to U.S. pop culture in general.

“Judge is among the major figures of U.S. contemporary adult animation such as Matt Groening, Genndy Tartakovsky, Raphael Bob-Waksberg, …These bold creators never feared tackling controversial topics: the fissures of U.S. society, gender issues, identity, violence or sex. With them, animated series became a daring creative space, even more than features.”

For Jean, Judge’s visit to Annecy is a momentous occasion that reflects the Festival’s determination to highlight the dynamism, social relevance and rebellious audacity of American adult animation series. “Mike Judge’s influence on two generations of creators is undeniable: He has taken social satire to new heights and we wanted to celebrate his work and him.”

In a little more than three months,  “King of the Hill” executive producers Greg Daniels and showrunner Saladin K. Patterson will join Judge by Annecy lake for a screening event honoring his legacy. The conversation will celebrate the enduring cultural impact of both “King of the Hill” and “Beavis and Butt-Head”, while also offering audiences an exclusive preview of “King of the Hill” Season 15, as well as a signing session.

Season 14 of “King of the Hill” is available to stream now on Hulu in the U.S., and on Disney+ internationally.
