‘Emily in Paris’ Creator Sets Netflix Rom-Com Series ‘Uncorked’

Darren Star is setting his sights on Napa Valley.

Netflix announced Wednesday that Star and David Schulner have set the romantic comedy series “Uncorked” at the streamer.

Per the official logline, the show “delves into the life of a talented but self-destructive winemaker who returns to Napa for her second chance at love, legacy and that elusive 100 point wine. (Not that she’s constantly refreshing winespectator.com or anything.) This is a woman whose greatest passion is also her fatal flaw — a failing that, usually begins before lunch on Tuesday.”

The series keeps Star in business with Netflix, as he is the creator of the streamer’s hit series “Emily in Paris,” which was recently renewed for a sixth season. The fifth season spent five weeks in the Netflix Top 10 English language TV chart. Star is also known for creating hit shows like “Beverly Hills, 90210,” “Melrose Place,” “Sex and the City,” and “Younger.”

“Seeing audiences around the world fall in love with ‘Emily in Paris’ has been a dream,” Star said. “As
Emily’s story continues to inspire and unfold, I’m excited to continue my relationship with Netflix and
explore a new world with ‘Uncorked.’ We’re diving straight into the legacy and romance of Napa Valley,
where every great vintage has a unique story to tell.”

Star and Schulner are writers, co-showrunners, and executive producers on “Uncorked.” “Emily in Paris” EPs Tony Hernandez and Lilly Burns will executive produce under their Counterpart banner. Universal Television, where both Star and Schulner are under overall deals, will produce.

“Darren and I wanted to create a series that explores what happens when your greatest passion is also your Achilles’ heel,” Schulner said. “With Napa’s beauty and bounty as our setting, we hope the audience never wants to leave. We want to thank Netflix and Universal Television for indulging our copious amounts of day drinking in the name of meticulous research.”

Schulner most recently created the NBC medical drama “New Amsterdam,” which ran for five seasons at the broadcast network. He is currently an executive producer on the Fox series “Memory of a Killer” starring Patrick Dempsey, which is based on the Belgian film “De Zaak Alzheimer.” His other credits include “Emerald City,” “Kings,” and “Desperate Housewives.”

Star is repped by UTA and Ziffren Brittenham. Schulner is repped by UTA and Myman Greenspan.

“Darren Star’s storytelling has found an incredible home on Netflix, with global hits like ‘Emily in Paris’
and Sex and the City becoming true cultural touchstones for our members,” said Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s vice president of US comedy series. “We are thrilled that Darren and David have partnered on this new series which tells the story of romance and redemption set in the beautiful Napa Valley that we believe will connect with audiences around the world.”
