Disney has named 28-year company veteran Josh D’Amaro as its next chief executive, bringing an end to an internal battle over who will succeed longtime boss Bob Iger.

D’Amaro, who heads Disney’s theme parks business, triumphed over the other leading candidate, co-chair of Disney entertainment Dana Walden, in the battle to succeed Iger.

The theme parks chief had been overseeing the expansion of the cruise fleet, as well as the construction of a new theme park in Abu Dhabi.

“[D’Amaro] has an instinctive appreciation of the Disney brand, and a deep understanding of what resonates with our audiences, paired with the rigour and attention to detail required to deliver some of our most ambitious projects,” Iger said in a Tuesday statement.

Walden has been appointed president and chief creative officer of Disney.
