According to Variety, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office shared on Tuesday (March 4) that that natural gas is “bot believed to be a factor” in the couple’s deaths, and the gas company’s report will be sent to the Office of the Medical Investigator.

The gas company did find a “miniscule” leak at one of the stove burners, which registered at 0.33% gas in the air, though that is not significant enough to be fatal.

They also found four more red tag code violations with a water heater and three gas log lighters in fireplaces, though none involved a leak or carbon monoxide.

Gene and his wife were found dead in their home last week, along with one of their dogs. Their deaths have been labeled suspicious.

On Friday (February 28), it was reported that carbon monoxide poisoning has been ruled out, and new evidence revealed when he likely passed.

Earlier this week, a forensic pathologist shared a theory of what may have happened in Gene and Betsy‘s deaths.

Our continued thoughts go out to Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa‘s loved ones during this time.
