Real Madrid’s victory over Barcelona in last week’s clásico could be the catalyst for José Mourinho’s team to mount a serious La Liga challenge. This makes three points against Racing Santander on Sunday a necessity.
Racing won’t be easy opponents to overcome. Indeed, the Verdiblancos are unbeaten in all five home matches in La Liga this season and are fresh off a momentous victory over Espanyol clinched by a winning goal six minutes from the end.
Real Madrid are firm favorites due to the talent level of their squad, but Mourinho’s side haven’t always found it easy against low defensive blocks. Racing could put up a strong fight.

What to watch for
Against Barcelona, Mourinho found the right balance to secure the biggest result of his fledgling second tenure as Real Madrid manager. It was the sort of performance that suggested Los Blancos could make a fight of this season’s title race.
Away to Racing, though, the tactical situation will be very difficult. Real Madrid won’t have the same open space to attack with the likelihood being that the 15-time European champions will have to break down a low defensive block.
Racing have yet to keep a clean sheet in 10 La Liga matches and have conceded 17 goals in their last five league outings. This pattern will have to change if the promoted side is to stand any chance of stopping Kylian Mbappé and Co.
Player to watch: Kylian Mbappé, Real Madrid – Only Raphinha has scored more La Liga goals than Mbappé this season. The French forward is Real Madrid’s main man in the final third. This is especially true with Vinícius Júnior still unavailable due to a red-card suspension.
