“Nobody Wants This” creator Erin Foster has responded to Adam Brody‘s support for Palestine, saying: “I disagree with him, and that’s OK.”
Speaking on an upcoming episode of the “Not Skinny but Not Fat” podcast hosted by Amanda Hirsch (via Entertainment Weekly), Foster was asked to address Brody’s recent interview with GQ in which he said “put me down as wanting a free Palestine.” Brody stars alongside Kristen Bell in “Nobody Wants This,” which follows a rabbi who falls in love with a girl who is not Jewish.
“You know, it’s complicated,” Foster said of Brody’s comments. “I think our work environment, our set is very similar to dinner tables around the world where people are having debate and discussion and disagreeing. And, you know, while I love Adam, I also disagree with him, and that’s OK.”
Brody, who grew up in a Jewish family but previously told Variety he’s “not religious,” faced backlash from fans of the show after his statement. Foster, who based “Nobody Wants This” on her own experience converting to Judaism before marrying her husband, said she wants “our Jewish fans to know that I see you and I hear you and I understand how you feel.”
“The show has always been and always will be a love letter to Judaism. That is why I made this show,” she said. “It’s because of how beautiful of an experience I’ve had becoming Jewish and being a Jewish person. And sitting here right now, at this time in the world when there is almost zero positive representation of Jewish people, I think it’s so important to have that.”
However, Foster continued that “everyone is entitled to a different opinion,” adding: “I can just tell you what I created this show for, and what the intention of the show is.”
In his GQ interview, Brody said he has discussed the Israel-Gaza conflict “a lot” in his personal life, but hadn’t previously spoken about it publicly because it doesn’t tend to come up.
“I just answer the questions I’m asked,” he said. “And it’s true. I’m not wearing a pin, so I’m not inviting a certain question, and perhaps I should. I really admire people who do. But 99% of what I’m asked about is about the show. I’m not trying to plead ignorance — here we are doing a political interview, so it makes sense that we wade into this territory — but I’ve never ducked a question, really, not a political question anyway.”
He then made his stance on the issue clear, saying: “Put me down as thinking it’s a genocide. Put me down as wanting a free Palestine. It’s awful that it’s taken so much death and misery, but it does feel like it’s reaching a breaking point that it should have a while ago.”
Season 3 of “Nobody Wants This” is now streaming on Netflix.
