“Kevin was only supposed to be in the first three seasons,” Sheridan said during a June episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast. “That was in his contract.”
However, the showrunner noted that Paramount was “so scared” of not having Costner in the popular series, even though “Kevin was ready to go.”
“He had other things he wanted to do,” Sheridan added. “But he stayed on for another two seasons.”
Indeed, Costner went on to write and direct his Horizon: An American Saga film series, which premiered in 2024. And despite his exit, he still holds appreciation for his time on Yellowstone.
“It was something that really changed me,” Costner said on Instagram in 2024. “I loved it, and I know you loved it.”
