In a competitive situation, Amazon MGM Studios is set to develop a series based on the short story “Shadow Work” by Adrienne Miller, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.
Miller will write the pilot for the one-hour series and serve as executive producer. Former Amazon exec Marc Resteghini will executive produce via Jack Tar Pictures, which has an overall deal at Amazon MGM Studios. According to sources, the producers fielded multiple offers before Amazon preemptively acquired it.
Reps for Amazon declined to comment.
The logline for the show states that it follows Genevieve Pearce, “an elite ghostwriter trusted with the secrets of the rich, famous, and infamous. She embeds in their worlds, excavates secrets, reshapes memories, manufactures redemption, and transforms the powerful into the people they want the world to believe they are. Because in Genevieve’s world, whoever controls the story controls reality. But as she rewrites everyone else’s stories, she’s forced to confront the first story she ever helped rewrite: her own.”
Miller is the author of the novel “The Coast of Akron” as well as the memoir “In the Land of Men,” in which she describes her rise through the male-dominated magazine world to become the first female literary editor at Esquire. During her time at Esquire, the publication won the National Magazine Award for fiction. Miller is also a frequent contributor to Vogue.
She is repped by Gersh and Yorn Levine.
Resteghini is currently an executive producer on the Amazon series “Young Sherlock,” which received a Season 2 renewal in April. His current slate includes an animated series adaptation of the Tui T. Sutherland “Wings of Fire” books, a feature adaptation of the upcoming Lauren Oliver novel “The Girl in the Lake” in partnership with United Artists, and a series inspired by the lyrics and characters of Billy Joel’s songbook from creator David Weil and MGM Television. Prior to launching his own production banner, Resteghini was a senior creative executive at Amazon for nearly a decade.
