Gomez and Swift’s friendship first began in the late aughts when Gomez briefly dated Nick Jonas and Swift was dating Joe Jonas, who the Grammy winner split from in 2008.
“Everything was cute, we were young,” Gomez shared during an appearance on Therapuss in August. “She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other because it was really sweet.”
“At that age we became best friends—bonded over the breakup, as girls do,” she recalled. “And then we just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after, and here we are now 16 years later.”
And the feeling of instant friendship was certainly there for Swift.
“I knew from when I met her I would always have her back,” she told WSJ. Magazine in 2020. “In my life, I have the ability to forgive people who have hurt me. But I don’t know if I can forgive someone who hurts her.”
