France have also made a strong early impression, scoring six goals in back-to-back wins over Senegal and Iraq. Mbappé has helped himself to four goals so far while Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola have also contributed to arguably the most fearsome attack in the tournament.

Player to watch: Michael Olise, France – The Bayern Munich forward operates as a No 10 for the national team and is the creative force behind France’s forward line. Olise continues to grow into one of the game’s best all-round attackers.

Senegal have yet to get going after suffering back-to-back defeats to France and Norway. However, the African giants have more to offer and could still make the tournament’s knockout rounds with a dominant performance and result.

Iraq had the misfortune of landing in the most challenging group at this World Cup and their task won’t get much easier against Senegal. Graham Arnold’s side have struggled defensively and that could continue today against a talented attack.

Player to watch: Ismaïla Sarr, Senegal – The Crystal Palace winger has been a consistent threat for Senegal so far, knifing in behind opponents from the right side.

What to watch for

Cape Verde have been one of the best underdog stories of the World Cup so far and have given themselves a strong chance of making it out of Group H. But can the Blue Sharks impose their own game on an opponent after playing with their backs to the wall against Uruguay and Spain?

Saudi Arabia started their tournament with an admirable draw against Uruguay, but haven’t won a World Cup game since 2022 when they memorably got the better of Lionel Messi and Argentina. Georgios Donis must get more out of his attacking players to make the knockout rounds.

Player to watch: Vozinha, Cape Verde – The 40-year-old goalkeeper has been one of the unexpected stars of the World Cup and will have at least one more opportunity to demonstrate his shot-stopping ability.

What to watch for

Uruguay haven’t played much like a Bielsa team at this World Cup so far. The 1930 and 1950 winners have struggled for creativity and have been one-dimensional in the final third in draws against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia. To make the knockout rounds, Uruguay must show more variety.

Spain bounced back from their underwhelming opener against Cape Verde to put four past Saudi Arabia. Lamine Yamal’s return gave the European champions a much-needed direct threat, which opened up space and restored faith that Spain will be as strong as was predicted before the start of the tournament.

Player to watch: Lamine Yamal, Spain – The 18-year-old is Spain’s biggest difference-maker and the player who makes everything click for them in the final third. Without him, they simply don’t have the necessary invention.

Egypt v Iran

Time (ET): 11pm

Stadium: Seattle Stadium

How to watch

United States: FS1 / Telemundo (Stream on Fubo)

Canada: TSN (Stream)

United Kingdom: BBC Two (Stream)

Australia: SBS (Stream)

What to watch for

Fresh from their maiden World Cup win, Egypt can now make the knockout rounds for the first time in their history with a draw against Iran. Mohamed Salah and Co have shown their ability to play on the counter, as they did against Belgium, but also their capacity against a low block, like New Zealand’s.

Iran held Belgium to a goalless draw that demonstrated their defensive resolve. Amid difficult circumstances, Team Melli have proved themselves as difficult to beat, although they might have to impose themselves more forcibly in the opposition half to take the game to Egypt on Friday.

Player to watch: Mohamed Salah, Egypt – The former Liverpool winger became Egypt’s all-time top scorer by finding the back of the net against New Zealand and will be a threat once again against Iran.

New Zealand v Belgium

Time (ET): 11pm

Stadium: BC Place Vancouver

How to watch

United States: FOX / Telemundo (Stream on Fubo)

Canada: TSN (Stream)

United Kingdom: BBC One (Stream)

Australia: SBS (Stream)

What to watch for

New Zealand might have suffered defeat to Egypt in their last outing, but the team placed 85th in the Fifa rankings have made a positive impact so far, scoring in each of their two outings. Friday’s encounter with Belgium, however, could be their toughest test.

Belgium have struggled to get going. Their only goal in two games was an own goal and Rudi Garcia appears to be scrambling for answers. The Red Devils clearly have talent, but have yet to find the right formula. This could be their last chance to hit their stride.

Player to watch: Kevin De Bruyne, Belgium – The Napoli playmaker is Belgium’s primary creative force and will have the onus placed on him to break down a New Zealand side that will be set up in a low defensive block for the most part.
