Who Was Daveigh Chase?
The reason we all know that ohana means family, Chase made a splash voicing Lilo—the titular 6-year-old who befriends alien Stitch—in Disney’s 2002 animated flick Lilo & Stitch. Four months later, she performed quite the pivot, crawling into the zeitgest (and many viewers’ nightmares) as The Ring antagonist Samara Morgan.
Sadly, off-screen, her life was nearly as traumatic as her fame-making role.
In addition to a few legal issues (she was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance in 2018 and released on bail after two hours), “behind the scenes, she’s faced more than her share of hardship,” boyfriend Hernandez wrote in the GoFundMe he created before her June 16 death. “After a difficult childhood and a painful falling out with her family, Daveigh was bullied and struggled to find safety and happiness in downtown LA.”
That changed when she crossed paths with Hernandez.
“When we met, I promised to protect her and give her the love and comfort she deserved,” he explained, sharing their desire to amass enough funds for a shared home. “Together, we found moments of happiness and hope.”
