Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman embark on quite the boundary-pushing relationship in the first trailer for director Gregg Araki‘s irreverent sex comedy “I Want Your Sex.”
Featuring everything from ball gags, whips, strap-ons to a threesome gone widely wrong, “I Want Your Sex” follows an assured artist (Wilde) who begins a sadomasochistic relationship with her assistant (Hoffman). The cast also includes Charli xcx, Mason Gooding, Chase Sui Wonders and Daveed Diggs.
“I Want Your Sex” was one of the buzziest titles out of Sundance, selling U.S. distribution rights to Magnolia Pictures for seven figures after a bidding war. “This unconventional rom-com feels like a natural extension of the queer indie pioneer’s sex-positive sensibility, even as he steers things into novel territory,” Peter Debruge wrote in his review for Variety out of the festival, noting the film’s screwball comedy sensibilities.
At Sundance, much of the talk surrounding the film revolved around its bold depiction of sex, pleasure and pain. “This movie is an incredibly irreverent, playful take on showing this part of the sexual revolution of a young person,” Wilde told Variety at the film’s Sundance premiere. “Sex is used as a metaphor for something that’s really applicable to everybody’s experience.”
Araki is known for his ’90s Teen Apocalypse Trilogy, comprised of “Totally F***ed Up,” “The Doom Generation” and “Nowhere.” After 2014’s “White Bird in a Blizzard” starring Shailene Woodley, he went on to direct multiple episodes of TV, including “Riverdale,” “13 Reasons Why,” “Monster” and “American Gigolo.” “I Want Your Sex” marks his anticipated return to film.
