‘The Odyssey’ Sets 70mm Run at Westwood’s Village Theatre

Christopher Nolan‘s “The Odyssey” will screen in 70mm at Westwood’s Village Theatre for a special three-week run in partnership with the American Cinematheque.

Starting July 17, in partnership with Universal Pictures and the Village Directors Circle, the Los Angeles theater will offer three showtimes a day. Tickets will go on sale Thursday at 9 a.m. PT. Nolan and “The Odyssey” producer Emma Thomas are partners in the Village Directors Circle, the group of filmmakers led by Jason Reitman who joined to buy the historic venue in 2024.

The American Cinematheque is programming several screenings as fundraising opportunities ahead of the closure this fall for a year of renovation and restoration. The special events kicked off with the world premiere of James Cameron and Billie Eilish’s “Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D).”

Shot using new Imax technology, “The Odyssey” stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. The adaptation of Homer’s saga is produced by Thomas and Nolan for their company, Syncopy, and is executive produced by Thomas Hayslip.

“Presenting Christopher Nolan’s latest epic in glorious 70mm on the largest traditional theater screen in Los Angeles is an honor for the American Cinematheque,” said American Cinematheque Artistic Director Grant Moninger. “The Village booth will be fitted with restored dual 70mm projectors to ensure a world-class presentation throughout the entire run,” he added.

“There are many reasons to go to the movies, but few better than a three-week run of ‘The Odyssey’ in 70mm at one of the most beautiful movie palaces in the country,” said Reitman. “This American Cinematheque series is a preview of what we hope the restored Village Theatre will become. A home for great filmmakers, great audiences, and the kind of theatrical experiences that simply can’t be replicated anywhere else. Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas were among the very first filmmakers to step in when the Village Theatre needed help. Their commitment to keeping the spirit of moviegoing alive continues to inspire us all.”

The American Cinematheque will program, manage and be the operating partner for the Village Directors Circle, and when the renovated venue reopens in 2027 it will host screenings with in-person conversations, awards season events, new theatrical releases, retrospectives and tributes in addition to the Cinematheque’s programming and film festivals such as Beyond Fest, Bleak Week, This Is Not a Fiction and Ultra Cinematheque 70. The Village will also continue to be a destination for hosting film premieres. The lobby of the 1000-seat-plus theater is designed to include space for concessions, artifacts from the filmmakers’ personal collections, retail and event space.
