Jennifer Garner Reveals Why ’13 Going on 30′ Led to Some “Tortured Years” for Her, Ben Affleck’s Kids
Jennifer Garner is opening up about a difficult period in her personal life.
The 13 Going on 30 alum—who shares kids Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 13, with ex-husband Ben Affleck—detailed how the former couple’s 2015 split impacted their young family.
“When my kids were little, I worked so little,” she told InStyle in an interview published June 3, “and then we had such an upheaval in our family, that I really hardly worked for a long time.”
Jennifer and Ben announced their breakup in 2015 before finalizing their divorce three years later. Though the Alias actress took a step back from acting to focus on her family life, she leaned into that decision even further following their split.
“First of all,” she explained, “when you’re in a performance kind of role, you give up a year/year-and-a-half of performance while you are pregnant, having a baby, recovering.”
Though she still managed to nab roles in Juno and The Kingdom during that period—where she was breastfeeding between scenes, according to the outlet—it wasn’t enough for her agent, who suggested Jennifer sign onto 2013’s Academy Award–winning film Dallas Buyers Club or consider retirement.
