Taye Diggs is getting into the rapidly growing vertical drama business. The actor has partnered with producers Autumn Federici (“All For Love,” “Forever”), Shelby Stone, James Black (“All-American”) and Troy Brookins to launch Microhouse Films.
Diggs and partners join a space that first grew in popularity overseas, with Hollywood veterans now dabbling in it as well. Microhouse Films touts itself as driven by filmmakers. The partnership comes as Diggs, Brookins, Stone and Federici are currently filming the microdrama “Tides of Temptation,” starring Swag Boy Q, as an offshoot of the Lifetime movie “Terry McMillan Presents: Paradise With You” (which stars Diggs).
“When we thought about how to meaningfully impact the vertical space, we immediately focused on the creators and storytellers whose livelihoods depend on where this industry is headed,” Diggs said in a statement. “Microhouse Films is about creating a model that supports them in this next phase and allows them to keep telling stories that move us.”
Microhouse Films said it will launch without a subscription fee for creators or audiences, and it won’t charge to upload or to host content. Filmmakers can choose which episodes to offer for free; beyond that, for pricing, Microhouse will utilize a token-based system for users to watch more content via in-app coins.
“The industry is rapidly changing, and we have an opportunity to redefine who benefits in this new ecosystem that puts control directly in the hands of filmmakers,” Federici, Stone, Black and Brookins said in a joint statement. “We’re excited to introduce a model for vertical storytelling with Microhouse Films that places a premium on both the quality of the work and the storyteller behind the content.”
