Excited to watch “Project Hail Mary” from home? You’re going to have to wait a while. The film’s co-director Christopher Miller revealed in an X post that his blockbuster space adventure “won’t be on streaming anytime soon” as Amazon MGM extends the movie’s theatrical release. The only way to see Ryan Gosling and Rocky team up will be the big screen for the foreseeable future.
“We announced yesterday that MGM is extending the exclusive theatrical window for ‘Project Hail Mary,’ so it won’t be on streaming anytime soon,” Miller announced. “This is a movie that needs to be seen on a big screen – and with a full return to IMAX screens for one week only starting this weekend, make plans to see it in a theater now! Bring friends and loved ones. It’s an experience to share with others.”
Gosling headlines Miller and Phil Lord’s film adaption of Andy Weir’s 2021 book of the same name, which centers on a school teacher turned astronaut tasked with stopping a mysterious entity from blacking out the sun. Sandra Huller also stars in the movie.
“Project Hail Mary” has become one the year’s blockbuster sensations with $517 million and counting from movie theaters worldwide since opening in March. The film has been playing in U.S. theaters for just over one month, which is usually when studios start making movies available to watch from home via PVOD platforms. “Scream 7,” for instance, hit PVOD 31 days after its theatrical opening.
One of the encouraging trends to emerge out of this year’s CinemaCon (where Amazon first announced “Project Hail Mary’s” return to Imax screens) was the recommitment from Hollywood studios to maintain theatrical windows. Despite “Scream 7’s” recent 31-day window, Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison doubled down on future Paramount movies having a 45-day window. Universal Pictures recently announced its movies will have five weekends of theatrical exclusivity in 2026 and seven weekends in 2027 before moving to home entertainment.
