Valero Texas Open: JJ Spaun clinches title after Robert MacIntyre fails to force play-off on final hole | Golf News

Robert MacIntyre and Matt Wallace finished tied for second as JJ Spaun claimed his second Valero Texas Open title.

The 2025 US Open champion produced a superb back-nine surge, making three birdies and an eagle on his way to a five‑under 67 that moved him to 17 under, one shot clear of the British pair.

MacIntyre, who had led for much of the week at TPC San Antonio, returned early on Sunday to complete 12 holes of his storm‑delayed third round, signing off for an even‑par 72 to retain a one‑shot lead heading into the final round.

Spaun, playing an hour ahead, set the target with his impressive finish, and although MacIntyre, who had nine straight pars to open his final round as he slipped three off the lead, reignited his challenge with an eagle at the par‑four 17th, he could not match Spaun’s total.

The Scot’s hopes unravelled at the 18th when an errant second shot from the wet fairway left him 30 feet short. His birdie attempt, which would have forced a play-off, came up short.

Spaun, who had not finished inside the top 20 in seven PGA Tour starts this year, celebrated his first victory since last year’s US Open triumph at Oakmont.

“This game is so crazy,” Spaun said. “I haven’t been feeling the form I wanted based on last season, and I’ve just been trying to take each day as it comes and accept what I have.

“There’s so much that comes with winning big events like a US Open or any major. I put a lot of pressure on myself to start the year, a lot of expectations.

“I went into the last few weeks, starting at The Players, trying to free myself up and put less pressure on myself. It’s been challenging, but sticking to that mantra has really helped me.”

Joining Ryder Cup star MacIntyre in a tie for second on 16 under were Wallace and Kim, who both produced strong final‑round performances, while Ludvig Åberg shared fifth place with Andrew Putnam.
