‘Pee Mak’ Director Banjong Pisanthanakun Returns With Horror ‘Inherit’

South Korean film studio Barunson E&A (“Parasite”) has come aboard “Inherit,” an upcoming horror feature from Thai production house GDH 559 (“How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies”), taking on international sales duties across North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa.

The partnership extends an existing working relationship between the two companies and introduces Barunson E&A to Banjong Pisanthanakun, a director with a string of major Thai genre hits to his name. His credits include “Shutter,” the comedy-horror phenomenon “Pee Mak” – which set the all-time local box office record in Thailand and became the first local title to draw more than ten million admissions – and “The Medium.”

“Inherit” brings Pisanthanakun back to the director’s chair for the first time in four years. The story centers on a prosperous family whose carefully maintained image begins to collapse after an ancient centipede spirit enters their lineage. The screenplay draws from “Tayat Asun,” a Thai horror novel that has sustained a devoted readership since its 1991 debut, spawning television versions over the decades but never previously a theatrical film.

Davika Hoorne, whose recent credits include “A Useful Ghost” – awarded the Cannes Critics’ Week Grand Prize and released in Thailand through GDH – leads the cast.

GDH 559’s 2024 title “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” took in around $73.8 million globally, while “Human Resource” earned a Venice Film Festival premiere in 2025.

The move fits a pattern for Barunson E&A, which has been cultivating partnerships with prominent production talent across the region. In Indonesia, the company holds an exclusive arrangement with Come and See Pictures, the production company of director Joko Anwar, whose profile has grown considerably beyond Southeast Asia. Anwar’s Prime Video feature “The Siege at Thorn High” and his Berlinale-premiering comedy-horror “Ghost in the Cell” both count Barunson E&A among their key international partners.

“’Inherit’ is a project we have been deeply passionate about for some time,” said Jina Osothsilp, CEO of GDH 559. “It is a story that feels deeply rooted in our culture, yet speaks to something universal about family, legacy, and what we cannot escape. We are especially excited to be collaborating with Barunson E&A. Their strong global perspective makes them an ideal partner in bringing ‘Inherit’ to international audiences.”

Yoonhee Choi, CEO of Barunson E&A, added: “Beneath its genre framework, the film explores themes of family, guilt, and hypocrisy, giving it both emotional weight and strong international appeal. Banjong Pisanthanakun is a filmmaker with a singular voice, and we see this as the beginning of a broader creative relationship.”

The partnership comes as Barunson E&A has been broadening its involvement in earlier-stage development, most recently through a memorandum of understanding with Studio N to develop projects rooted in webtoon and web novel IP. Discussions with GDH are expected to move in a similar direction, with co-development and co-production possibilities on the table.
