Russell T Davies’ ‘It’s a Sin’ Is Getting Dance Adaptation

Russell T Davies’ award-winning drama “It’s a Sin” is set to be adapted as a dance by leading U.K. dance company Rambert.

Davies will exec produce the project alongside pop duo Pet Shop Boys and Glyn Fussell. Rambert’s artistic director Benoit Swan Pouffer will choreograph and direct while Kaite O’Reilly (“The Almond and the Seahorse”) serves as dramaturg.

Set in the 10-year period between 1981 and 1991, “It’s a Sin” follows a group of young gay men and their friends in London as they are engulfed by the HIV/AIDS crisis.

The dance, a co-production between Rambert and Factory International, will premiere at Aviva Studios in Manchester. More details, including performance dates and cast, are still to be announced.

Roman GianArthur serves as composer and music supervisor. Luke Halls Studio is creating set and video design.

“’It’s a Sin’ was such a special show for me, and it’s one of the greatest honors of my life to have the show transformed by Rambert into something new and exciting,” said Davies.

Swan Pouffer added: “Storytelling sits at the heart of Rambert’s mission. This is a story we feel compelled to tell right now, and collaborating with Russell — one of the most powerful storytellers of our time — is incredibly exciting. Together we’re exploring how dance and choreography can carry urgent, emotional narratives in a visceral way. I can’t wait to share this with audiences, and there is so much more still to come as the work evolves.”

“It’s a Sin” will be co-produced with Wales Millennium Centre, Capital Theatres (Edinburgh), Sadler’s Wells Theatre and Les Théâtres de la Ville (Luxembourg).
