The Avengers assembled once again — this time on Hollywood’s biggest night.
Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, who will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in this year’s “Avengers: Doomsday,” reunited at the Oscars to present the best adapted and original screenplay categories.
“The script. It’s the driving force of any film, and it’s truly been a banner year for screenwriters,” Downey Jr. began saying, as Evans interrupted him to ask what his co-star got him for the 14th anniversary of “The Avengers.” Evans gifted Downey Jr. a signed copy of the “Avengers” script, while the Iron Man star gave Evans his valet receipt. They went on to present the adapted screenplay Oscar to Paul Thomas Anderson for “One Battle After Another.”
As they announced the original screenplay nominees (which went to “Sinners” writer Ryan Coogler), Downey Jr. gave Evans the sparkly underwear worn by Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike.” A frantic Tatum yelled from the audience that he would need the underwear “for work later.”
In a nod to their “Doomsday” characters, Downey Jr. wore a dark green suit jacket, evoking his villainous Doctor Doom costume, while Evans wore a dark blue, much like Captain America.
The two stars became household names playing Iron Man and Captain America throughout the MCU’s beginning years, but they took a Marvel break after 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark sacrificed himself to save the universe from Thanos, and Evans’ Steve Rogers decided to retire by traveling back in time and growing old with his first love, Peggy Carter. However, like all good comic-book characters, these superheroes aren’t gone forever.
Downey Jr. was revealed to be returning as the next major Marvel villain, Doctor Doom, in “Doomsday.” He was teased in the post-credits scene of last year’s “Fantastic Four: First Steps” and is rumored to be some kind of variant of Iron Man from another universe. Evans wasn’t in the original casting announcement for “Doomsday,” but he was confirmed to be returning in a teaser late last year that kicked off a year-long countdown to the new “Avengers” movie.
Evans and Downey Jr. are far from the only Marvel stars returning for “Doomsday.” They’ll be joined by Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Simu Liu, Tenoch Huerta, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen and Lewis Pullman.
