Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick Score Big Laughs With Meta Horror Comedy

Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedwick, along with their kids, Sosie Bacon and Travis Bacon, took meta to a whole new level on Friday night at SXSW Festival with the debut of “Family Movie.”

With the proud mother and father taking on roles as both co-directors and actors in the project, the family affair received massive applause and loud laughter when it debuted in the perfect slot: Friday the 13th.

“All of us love horror. Coincidentally, I was in the original ‘Friday the 13th,’ it is Friday the 13th,” said Kevin Bacon during the Q&A after the film.

The indie movie is a perfect example of life imitating art — minus the murder. The family, who were filming an Indie horror movie on a farm, portray a family filming an Indie horror movie on a farm. While their own family farm, where they record (and post to Instagram) many home videos, is set in New England, the movie was filmed outside of Austin, Texas.

Kevin Bacon referred to the movie, which runs a tight 1 hour 21 minutes, as “super, super, super low budget,” which brought along many challenges and resulted in many nights of Domino’s pizza. But they are hopeful that it will excite audiences the way it did at the Zach Theater in Austin.

The bloody comedy also stars John Carroll Lynch, Jackie Earle Haley, Liza Koshy, Andrea Savage, Austin Amelio, Scoot McNairy and Nathaniel Woolsey. Koshy couldn’t help but point out the odd similarities to the movie when she joined the cast — joking she feared for her life.

“They do live on a farm, they are that warm and welcoming,” she says. Her character comes to see the movie being filmed, capturing the filmmaking process on her phone, when she sees a murder take place. All the phone footage shown in “Family Movie” was filmed by Koshy herself on her Google Pixel.

Travis Bacon, a musician in real life and in the show, did the score for the movie, which is currently searching for a distributor. Stay for the credits too, to catch home videos of the actual family through the years — from the birth of Travis and Sosie, to the family learning dances together during the pandemic.
