Jon Bastiste is married to Suleika Jaouad.

The couple married in February 2022.

Suleika is 36-year-old Emmy Award-winning journalist and best-selling author. She’s best known for the Emmy Award-winning Life, Interrupted column and video series for The New York Times. She has also written for outlets like Vogue, Glamour, NPR, and Women’s Health.

Suleika was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia when she was 22 while studying at Princeton University, a form of leukemia targeting blood and bone marrow. She beat it once, then beat it again in 2022.

Unfortunately, it has now come back for a third time, forcing the couple to skip the recent 2025 Grammys.

Earlier this month, the couple shared a joint post to Instagram celebrating their wins for best music film and for song written for visual media for the documentary American Symphony.

“On this lazy Sunday, life is good! We’re so honored to win the Grammy for Best Music Film (and also for Song Written For Visual Media too!). We couldn’t make it to the ceremony but we’re beaming love from our couch to yours, and sending gratitude to all who made this film possible,” they wrote.

In December 2024, she revealed she discovered she had cancer for “the third time” in an Instagram post.

“I have a little end-of-year ritual: I go through my entire camera roll from beginning to end. I did it yesterday, and I cried and felt overwhelming gratitude. When you learn for the third time you have cancer, it’s easy to feel hopeless. But my photos showed me that even in the hardest moments, there were so many joys. That life is not a monolith. That our forever work is to learn to hold the brutal and beautiful in the same palm,” she wrote.

“In 2024 so many surreal things happened—starting with our doc American Symphony being nominated for so many awards. For the Oscars the one and only @angelinajolie designed her first gown for me, and I adopted @lentilbatiste that weekend.”

She added that her “health was in flux.”

“I felt healthier than ever only to learn my leukemia was back. I had to adjust to a grueling monthly chemo regimen. My dad stepped in as my caregiver and I’ve cherished our one-on-one time.”

She added: “And then there’s my greatest joy — my husband @jonbatiste who’s been by my side at every turn on the roller coaster. I didn’t know a love like this was possible. He makes everything better.”

She also wrote in 2024 she felt her “lowest and most defeated” and also had “the wildest, most beautiful moments of my life.”

“Life is all flow all the time and there is a comfort in that flux. Like how I went straight from five days of chemo to taking our family on a special trip,” she wrote. We are wishing the best to her in her continued recovery.
