US President Donald Trump is unlikely to approve the sale of the long-range weapons to Nato allies for onward delivery to Kyiv, US and Ukrainian officials told the Financial Times.
Trump had previously suggested that sending the missiles could help bring Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table. However, following a call on Thursday with the Russian president, he appeared to soften his stance.
“We need Tomahawks for the United States of America too,” Trump told reporters. “We have a lot of them, but we need them. I mean we can’t deplete our country.”
Trump is expected to hear Zelenskyy’s case for the missiles during their meeting on Friday and to get clarity about how Kyiv would use them, according to a senior Ukrainian official and a US counterpart. But any decision is now likely to be postponed until after Trump’s expected talks with Putin in Budapest in the coming weeks.
